Why Geeks Need to Know How to Write

Well we got to communicate somehow right?

And yes I consider myself to be a geek. I love to code, play video games, and do things that most geeks do. And as a geek, there are many perspectives I can take this topic to explain why geeks to need to know how to write. Because at the end of the day, writing is an essential form of communication that allows people to share their ideas and information. It also allows information to be archived which sometimes other forms of communication such as talking cannot not always achieve.

As a programmer, it is essential to know how to write and explain your code out to others. It's really important that other people can take a look at your code, read comments and doc strings and say that they can understand what your program does even before they look at your code.

Programmers also need to document and write up results of their program, as well as bugs and error logging to make sure that they aren't creating more problems for themselves. For example, in this article, the author talks about keeping a log of his work. His logs are like in a form of conversation with himself so that he can keep track of what he's done, how he has done it, and what he's noticed or realized so that he can pick up his work at any time instead of remembering what he did last.

Now as a gamer, I can say that writing takes on more social aspects than technological. Gamers need to know how to write in order to communicate with other gamers. Imagine playing an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online Game), where you need to discuss with your team mates strategies on how to defeat a dungeon or something. It is crucial that there is solid communication and understanding or else any plans that you make will quickly fail.

Ever heard of Leeroy Jenkins?

So really its all about understanding. Geeks, whether they're programmers, gamers, or anything that's geeky, we all need to know how to write in order to be understood.

Thanks for reading!
